Dear Prospective Harvard BLSA Students,

The Harvard Black Law Students Association (HBLSA) was founded in 1967. Today HBLSA is the largest chapter in the National Black Law Students Association. With well over 100 members, HBLSA is truly reflective of the diversity that exists within the Black community of Harvard Law School.  HBLSA alumni range from Charles Ogletree, renowned legal scholar and our very own advisor, to Deval Patrick, Governor of Massachusetts, to Debra Lee, CEO of BET, to Barack and Michelle Obama, President and First Lady of the United States of America.

We, the Black Law Students Association of Harvard Law School, exist for the support, guidance and direction of Black students in academic, professional and social endeavors. Our main function is to assist members in the development of their legal careers and to provide opportunities for exposure to various areas and aspects of the legal profession. We recognize the need to act positively in the development of the Black community, to encourage cooperation and closer ties between members of the Law School’s Black community and to establish a vehicle through which our concerns are brought to bear on Harvard Law School policy and the community at large.

Harvard BLSA seeks to ensure that African-American students merge successfully into the social, academic, and cultural life at Harvard and in the greater Cambridge and Boston areas.  BLSA encourages close social and professional relationships among students and provides a supportive and stimulating intellectual environment.  We sponsor a variety of seminars on academic achievement, career development, and political awareness.  Our events and programs are varied in nature, including easing the 1L (first-year) transition, reaching out to the community, and interacting with other law schools.  Outside HBLSA, students are distinguished and are leaders in a wide range of student organizations such as Harvard Law Review, the Board of Student Advisers, and Harvard Legal Aid Bureau.

The following brochure—The Path to Law School: An Admissions Guide for Asian Pacific Americans—was prepared and written by the Harvard Asian Pacific American Law Students Association (APALSA) (http://harvard.apalsa.org/).  Harvard BLSA believes, however, that the invaluable information contained in the manual is directly relevant to black students applying to HLS as well.  We encourage you to use this resource in your exciting journey applying to law schools.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Lambert
